Cleo "Granny" Glanzer: Exclusive Interview

Friday, October 20, 2006

On Thursday night, I had the chance to sit down for a one-on-one interview with my grandmother, Cleo Glanzer, or Granny, as she has been called since the 80's when Big Bird's grandma was known as Granny Fanny on Sesame Street.  This interview was conducted over the phone with me typing the answers in real-time, but they are very accurate.  And yes, she was told that this was an interview that would appear online.  Granny lives alone in an apartment in Huron, SD, just as she has for the last nine years.  Her days usually consist of roaming Huron, eating at Burger King, and wandering the desolate Huron Mall.  Let's see just what else she's up to these days!

Hello Granny, how are you today?
Just sitting here, watching TV. Nothing to do. Nothing to do.

What did you do today?
Oh, I drove around. I ate. I walked around Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Coborns, Lewis. Just went around town like usual. Man-sakes, that Huron mall is a ghost town. Nothin out there.

What was the highlight of your day?
Just being able to get up and go. Get up and go in the morning.

Did you eat at Burger King today?
Yep, ate at Burger King and here at the apartment later on.

What did you have at Burger King?
Chicken. Always get chicken. You can fill up your pop and take it with you, that's what I always do.

How many days on the average week would you say you eat at Burger King?
Every day. Seven days a week. Unless someone comes into town and takes me out.

What are you looking most forward to? What date on your calendar do you have circled?
Well, heck, your Dad's coming into town Monday and we'll go out for dinner. Then Cleopatra usually comes into town on Sundays. That's good. Good to have someone to talk to. Good to have your dad come in.

What do you want for Christmas this year?
Nothing! Don't get me anything. I don't want nothing. Don't anybody buy me nothin', no clothes, nothing. I got what all I need.

What do you envision me doing throughout the course of the day?
What do you do? Well working I suppose. Yeah good thing you like to work cause you got a job now. You do good work just like your dad.

Would you consider coming to visit in Minneapolis?
Oh no, I won't be out there. I don't like to drive in Huron even.

What if Patra drove?
Well then yeah, if somebody drove heck I'd just hop in and go. Go for a ride. I just like to ride with somebody. I'd go anywhere if I didn't have to drive.

How does it feel to be a great-grandma with the additions of Peyton and Emerson to the family?
I feel good. Fine. I feel happy. That's something.

What do you remember from the 1930's?
Well heck I was born in '33. Them was the olden days.

Did you call them the olden days back then?
Yeah we call them the olden days. That was a long time ago.

When did you graduate from school?
I only went to high school for three years and then had to go to work. I could have finished but they needed me to work. Always workin' all the time. All work, no rest. Worked in the restaurant in Willow Lake.

How many years did you live in Carpenter?
Got married in '59, then moved to the farm. What year did I move to Huron? Just add and subtract. Put 'ner fifty years I guess. Forty.

Have you ever met anyone famous?
Heck no, I'm not that type of person. I wouldn't know a famous person. Your dad and Cleopatra I guess.

Do you still go to church regularly?
Saturday nights, five to six. Jeep-dist I like to go on Saturday nights. Yep.

Who do you hang out with during the day when you're out and about on the town?
No one special. There's nobody to hang around with. I wouldn't care if it was a man or woman or boyfriend or girlfriend or what. I need someone to be a special friend to. I need someone to live with. You got a roommate living with you dontcha? I wish I had someone living with me. Boy that would make all the difference. But then your dad and Cleopatra they come to town and take me out and boy I like that. But oh man I got nobody here to be a friend to.

What's the best place to eat when they come pick you up?
I don't know, there are so many. I don't care where we go I just like to ride and be around somebody. Seems good to have Cleopatra and Dickie come in to town.

What was your reaction to hearing Alex and Ann getting engaged?
Surprised! Your dad called me last night and said that and I was surprised! He asked if Alex had called and told me and no, he hadn't, he hadn't told me. So no I hadn't even heard until last night. But he's young. He's got college to go to in North Dakota. How can he afford to buy a ring when he's got school to pay for? I don't know how he can buy a ring, I know I couldn't. Alex and Ann. Jeepers.

Didn't you move to Washington at some point years ago?
Yeah I had an aunt out there. She seemed to want me to come out and stay with her. Wasn't there very long. Wish I hadn't gone. I don't even remember what the name of the town was.

Seattle?
What? No.

Spokane?
No.

Was it Washington, DC?
That was so many years ago I don't know what it would have been called.

Did you hear I might invite a few friends back to Carpenter in November for the annual Carpenter Bash?
No I didn't know they had one of those. Heck towns like Carpenter are all shrunk up. Three families living there nowadays. Nothin left of that town.

It will be me and some friends hanging out on the farm. Give them a taste of the country life.
Yeah you're good. You guys don't spend your money gambling and smoking and drinking. You's good like that.

But I did spend a lot of money going to Twins games this year.
I don't like sports. That doesn't interest me none. Nope, I don't like ball. Don't know nothin' about that stuff. But if you like it then that's good that you can have fun. That's different than drinking and gambling. You can spend your money how you want to I spose, cause you work hard for it. Just like your dad, he works too hard. And Cleopatra, they both work too hard. I wish they'd rest once in a while. Your dad works too hard sometimes. There's a such thing as working too much I think.

Well thanks for joining us tonight, Granny.
Gee I'm so glad you called. I just had my TV on and nothing to do. Jeepers it seems good when you kids call. Heck put 'ner ten o'clock. Gets dark early now. Been dark since 5 I think.

Well, talk to you later!
Okay, bye bye, God bless you.
