Jesse Cooney: Exclusive Interview

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Since meeting at DSU in 2002, Jesse Cooney has become a familiar face in both Madison and now the Twin Cities.  The Pierre, SD native followed my lead and took a job at Valleyfair in 2005, and has become a fixture in the VF Gaming community.  Today, he resides with the LaPlants in Eden Prairie and sells shoes at JC Penney.  I had a chance recently to sit down with Cooney and see what else he's been up to.

1. Hello Cooney, how are you today?
Pretty tired, long night early wake up you know the usual.

2. You are currently working two full-time jobs—JC Penney and Valleyfair. How much longer can you keep it up?
Unfortunately, this is no longer true. Due to lack of commitment and hours i was putting in at VF I had to step down in my position. It was a tough realization I had to make but unless i was going to work more than i thought i was able to I couldn't stay on. And there was no way i was going back to a game op. But I was def prepared to do it all the way through October.

3. You are one of the top shoe salesmen at JC Penney. What is your secret to success?
Lie, cheat, steal! Haha, no I work harder and faster and tell the customer what they want to hear regardless if its true or not.

4. What brought you back to Valleyfair for season #3?
Lori, Amanda, Tammy, in no particular order.

5. Four of you share a two-bedroom apartment. How would you describe your living arrangement?
It's somewhat similar to Burnsville but instead of you its Dan. Yeah, no its ok. I will like doing back to 3 people.

6. You would have to be considered the best dressed of anyone I know right now, wearing dress shirts and ties all about. Why the change in attire?
The reason I dress up goes back to the motto of a couple of great friends of mine, Barney and James Stinson. They wear suits which i wish i could do but they reason we dress up is to show people we are different than the millions of t-shirt and jeans lemming out there. It shows that we are a force to be reckon with.

7. Last summer's big craze was a rebirth of Magic the Gathering. Has that phase passed or is Magic still happening?
Maybe a bit but nothing like last year's craze. That was crazy.

8. You decided to stay in the Twin Cities full-time and not go back to DSU. Will you one day finish up your degree or is that a thing of the past?
Once I get the debt paid off I will definitely get my transcript up to a college somewhere around.

9. Do you have any exciting summer activities planned besides working?
I certainly didn't but now that I'll have some more free time a couple hookers seem like a good idea.

10. What is the best game to operate at Valleyfair?
Roll-a-Ball. I damn near finished a whole book up there last week.

11. If I were to take you out for a classy dinner, where would we go and what would you get?
Firelake Grillhouse and Cocktail and pry get the Honey-Cured Berkshire Pork Chop with White Russians to drink. Of course we would dress up like bad mothers and rock the town out.

12. Have you gotten into any confrontations with train conductors recently?
Damn near. One of those stupid rides people that was driving the train had the locker under mine and was getting in my way all the time.

13. What is a good story involving you and candy?
It was Halloween during 6th grade back in Pierre. I was dressed up as secret service with a couple other friend and we were 'protecting' our other friend who was dressed up as Bill Clinton. One thing led to another and egg ended up all over our president. But we did get the other kid to drop his bag of candy.

14. How has your life changed since winning the RyanGlanzer.com Big in 2006 Award for Most Attractive Person?
Let's see I got a killer Job at JCP. An amazing performance review and said I have a great shot at the next promoted position available. And the icing on the cake when we got lost driving home from Hopkins and you ended up getting pine needles in your ass. Your welcome for that G-Lanz!

15. Are there currently any young ladies in your life?
How young we talking here. Cause I'm not into that stuff anymore. 20+ going on 21.

16. Whatever happened to your official website, thecooney.com?
Its down the trash like most of my high school stuff. Had I been better at web development I would have definitely kept it up but at that time it was only html and javascript and I wasn't to worried about it. Plus only family visited it and it was expensive back then and I could never come to terms with a layout.

17. How has Facebook changed your life?
So many ways that i cannot list. But its allowed for better contact with friends.

18. In my recent Top 100 lists, I named "1979" my favorite song; "Seinfeld" my favorite TV show; and "Dazed and Confused" my favorite movie. What would your #1's have been?
I would have never been able to pick a top song. It changed so much. Top TV shows I could nail down to a top 5. Scrubs, HIMYM, Friends, Prison Break, and House. Movies are tough again but I would choose something with Edward Norton so pry 25th hour or Fight Club.

19. If a sales position opened at MB, Inc. and I guaranteed you could get the job, would you drop everything and pursue it?
In a heart beat.

20. Well thanks for joining us today, Cooney. Any closing remarks?
I just want to say I'm glad you made it back safe from the east coast and I hope it was remarkable. Jeff Snow Suit Up!
