Exclusive Interview: Kathy VanHeukelom

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

1. Hello Kathy, how are you today?
I'm good! I'm honored to finally be interviewed!

2. Tell us about the exciting news of a baby Van Heukelom on the way! Any names picked out?
Well, I'm due to have the baby on January 30, 2008. I've been very healthy throughout the pregnancy-no morning sickness or nausea-just a little extra tired. You'll have to wait til the baby come to find out the name! That way no one will have time to talk about how crazy it is...

3. How's the married life? What is it like being married to Jesse?
Married life is good. Marriage has been pretty easy for Jesse and I. I think especially since we've known each other so long. The biggest problem is Jesse keeping track of his keys and wallet. I think we'll get through it, though!

4. How is your job at USD going?
It's going very well. I'm one of the senior recruiters for the USD Admissions office. It's a fun job. I get to travel a lot which works really well with Jesse's study schedule.

5. How often do you get back to the old farm?
Hmm, it depends. It averages out to probably once every 3 months or so. We were just home for Thanksgiving which was a lot of fun. We're going to Michigan for Christmas (don't tell my doctor), so we may not get to the farm. My parents are pretty good about coming to visit us too!

6. Are your plans to stick around Vermillion for a while longer?
We'll be in Vermillion until Jesse is done with med school in 2010. That means I'll have lived in Verm for 9 years-that's half as long as I lived in Willow Lake...we're getting old! We really like it here. After that, how knows?!

7. What are your living arragements. Will you be getting a house with the baby due?
We actually live in a basement apartment of some folks who go to our church. It's 3-bedroom with washer, dryer, and dishwasher. It's a pretty sweet deal! We had thought about getting a house when we got married, but we didn't know how long we'd be in Vermillion; however, this has worked out very well. Plus, it'll be a cheap babysitter once the baby comes!

8. Is there any other exciting news from the Brower family? I haven't seen Jerry and Arlene in a coon's age!
Wow, that's a good question. It seems like there's always something exciting there...cows getting out, my mom almost getting run over on the county road, plus the constant skunk problem. Overall, they're doing well and aging well!

9. Can you believe it's already been 20 years since we rode to preschool together?
I really can't. I just remember my dad getting mad at Sara because she was playing with the door handle of the pickup as we were driving down the highway. Seatbelts...forget about 'em.

10. Whatever happened to Pepper, the family pooch?
Pepper actually died when I was 13. We found him when we returned from our family vacation to the Hills. It looked like he curled up on the hay and went to sleep. We were the same age. He was a good dog. My parents now have Simon; she's a good dog. My parents think she can understand human. She's so spoiled. Yes, I said "she" and her name is Simon.

11. Do you and Jesse get to see the Van Heukelom family very often? Any upcoming trips to Michigan?
We get to see them a good amount for how far they are away. Greg and his wife Sue made a crazy trip to SD just last week for our baby shower. They got here at 3 PM on Friday and left before 7 AM on Saturday morning. It was good to see them. We'll see them all for Christmas.

12. Do you see much of the Jordan and Calvin Krogman family in Vermillion?
We used to see them more but haven't in awhile. Jesse had a run-in with Jordan at the hospital in Sioux Falls. She was doing her nursing thing and Jesse had class. I hear there will be another addition to their family?!!

13. Who from the class of '01 do you hear the most and least from?
I hear the most from Jennifer Keating, Sarah Gronewold, and Kyla Madsen. I hear the least from Bobbie and Sara.

14. What was going through your head when you visited me in Minneapolis with your colleagues and my friend Jason threatened to kill everyone in the bar and banged on the table?
I try to block it out. Plus, I was a little out of it myself, SO it's easier to think about. I just couldn't believe it. The worst part was that people thought he was MY friend, not a friend of a friend. I think people thought I was crazy. But, I see my fellow recruiters from DSU and SDSU and we have a good laugh!

15. What are your favorite current TV shows?
Grey's Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, and a little bit of South Park.

16. Tell us a funny story involving you and a cooking mishap.
That's easy, it just happened last week. So, I thought I would be nice and make caramel rolls for the morning. First, I put WAY to many rolls in the bunt pan (they had to raise overnight). Then, I put the caramel on in the morning, and I guess I was supposed to do it the night before. Because I had too many rolls in the pan, the caramel came bubbling over the edge of the pan into the oven. It smelled horrible. The apartment was all smoky and it reeked. The worst part, though, was that our landlady left a message on our phone saying, "I know I don't call very often, but I was noticing a putrid smell coming up through the vents. Are you burning something or are you burning the house down?" I was a little embarrassed. Plus, she used the word "putrid." How bad is that!

17. How many states have you been to?
I believe I've been to 20 states.

18. Would it be awkward if we did the Glanzer family trip to Steamboat Springs again today with you and Brandon along?
It wouldn't be so bad...he has Gloria on the brain these days! Plus, I miss you guys.

19. Once Jesse gets his medical degree, would you allow him to operate on you?
As far as I know, he doesn't plan to be a surgeon, but, if he was, I suppose. I just won't let him delivery the baby.

20. Thanks for joining us today Kathy, any closing remarks?
Just "Hi" to all the old classmates who may read this. Stop by if you're ever in Vermillion. Oh, and maybe we'll see you over the big 125th celebration in WL this summer. Watch out for the stroller!
